Term Two Week Seven – Commencing Monday 9th June 2025

Feast of St Emilie de Vialar
Our children are currently working on some artwork across the classes that will be used to decorate the Church for the Feast of St Emilie de Vialar, which will take place on Tuesday, the 17th of June. Our school community will celebrate the Feast of Saint Emilie de Vialar on Wednesday, 18th of June. More information about what is planned for the day will be shared shortly. All families are invited to join for Mass at the Parish Church on the morning of Wednesday, 18th of June. 

2025 LifeLink Appeal
On Tuesday, Mr Munro and four of our children from the Year Six Class travelled with children from Sacred Heart Thornlie and St Jude’s in Langford to the LifeLink Appeal Launch for 2025. This launch took place at Newman College in Churchlands where the children had the opportunity to listen to an address from Archbishop Costelloe, network with children from other Catholic schools and learn more about the appeal. 

Each year, St Emilie’s supports the Life Link Appeal, which aims to support those in our community who are doing it tough through prayer, fundraising and the provision of services. Later in the term, the school will host a fundraising day with all funds going to those in need.

Vision for Learning – Student Education Sessions
At the commencement of the year, the School Vision for Learning was launched to the school community. This vital document articulates the why, what and how around how teaching and learning takes place at St Emilie’s. As part of the Vision for Learning, one of our five belief statements states: 

‘As Catholic educators of quality, called to courageously inspire and support all children, we believe that all children must have an active role in their learning.’ 

Given this belief statement, next week, the children will be involved in some learning in their own classes about the Vision for Learning in an attempt to assist them in understanding how we see teaching and learning as educators in the school and what role they play in their own learning. This learning will continue into Term Three and Term Four and we look forward to bringing the children with us, in understanding the Vision for Learning deeply.

New Crosswalk & Amherst Road Pedestrian Gate Safety Concern – No Parking on Amherst Road Verge
By now, I am sure that you have seen that there is a new crosswalk and pedestrian gate that has been installed to ensure that at all times, there is a safe entrance to the school on foot for pedestrians and that community members are not walking out through the drive through entrance to Amherst Road. Over recent weeks, I have observed community members parking on the Amherst Road verge and have received reports of community members using this new pedestrian gate to collect children from the side of busy Amherst Road like a drive through system. This is not the intention of this gate, and I ask that this practice stop. 

Vehicles that are parked on the verge at Amherst Road are blocking some of the pedestrian walkways, meaning that those people including our children who need to use the footpath are having to go onto Amherst Road to get around. This is extremely dangerous. Furthermore, cars are blocking the view to the entrance and exit driveways of the school, meaning that cars coming down Amherst Road cannot see. This is also very dangerous. 

While it is not the responsibility of the school to police the traffic outside of the school gates, I must in this instance advocate for the safety of the children and community members through the misuse of this new gate. Our school is well equipped to provide parking and drive through options for parents and carers in the morning and the afternoon, more so than many other schools in the metropolitan area. Please use the intended parking spots or drive through and refrain from parking on the verge at Amherst Road near the new pedestrian gate. 

Road Safety Around St Emilie’s
Over the last few weeks, stories have been shared with school staff by parents and carers about some concerning near misses occurring on the streets around St Emilie’s as children are walking or riding home. Some of these near misses have even occurred while parents have been in close proximity to their children. 

At St Emilie’s, children who walk or ride to school must sign permission to do so to ensure that school staff are aware. On the permission note, our recommendation is that children under the age of 10 do not ride or walk unaccompanied to school. This recommendation is set by the WA Government Road Safety Commission and endorsed by Kids Safe. 

Parents and carers, I urge you to please stay vigilant with your children in the car park and around the streets if your children walk or ride. Unfortunately, there are no second chances when it comes to accidents on the road. Please speak with your children and exercise every caution to ensure that safety on the roads is prioritised. 

Kindy Enrolment 2026 – A Call for Siblings 
There has been a phenomenal response to calls for applications for Kindy enrolments for 2026. Commencing this term, the school will begin interviewing children for Kindy in 2026. If you know of anyone who is interested in attending Kindy at St Emilie’s in 2026, please encourage them to submit an application to the School Admin office as soon as possible. 

We are especially calling families of children already enrolled at the school who have siblings who are Kindy age. Due to the high demand for places in Kindy in 2026, it is vital for you to submit an enrolment form to the school. Please note that just because you have a child enrolled at the school, does not mean that you automatically receive a guaranteed place for their sibling if you do not submit the application on time. 

OSH Club – Notification of Fee Increase
St Emilie’s OSHClub is a vital part of our community. The OSHClub here at the school provides before and after school care options for the children at St Emilie’s and both the school and OSHClub work closely together to achieve the best outcomes for our children. 

OSHClub have recently informed us here at the school that as of the 12th of August 2025, the fees for OSHClub will increase by 4.2%. This information will be communicated by OSHClub to families who currently have children enrolled in the service.

St Emilie’s Waste Sorted Fun Fact 
Earlier this term, some of the children in our older grades participated in a Waste Sorted Incursion. During this incursion, our visitors from Waste Sorted led our children through a waste audit in the school, where the children sorted through our items thrown in the bin for landfill. The results of this audit are back, and each week, we will share what was discovered at our school in the hope that we bring awareness to our collective impact on our environment. 

Did you know….. 

During our waste audit, it was counted that .4 kg of food scraps was placed in the bin instead of the compost bins provided in one day. Across the year, that is 73kg of food scraps that go to landfill and not into compost. 

P & F Student Disco
After meeting with the P & F Committee recently, we are excited to share that the School Disco has been confirmed that it will be going ahead on Friday, 20th of June. Further information will be shared about the School Disco, with the Kindy to Year Two session planned for a 2:45 pm start and the Year Three to Year Six session planned to commence at 4:15 pm.  

Year Five Assembly
Please come and join as the Year Five children lead assembly at the school on Friday 13th of June. Assembly commences at 8:50am in the School Hall and all are welcome to join for morning tea at the conclusion of assembly. 

P & F Community Meeting  – Wednesday 11th of June @ 8:45am
Please come and join the P & F Committee for the first Community Meeting for the P & F in Term Two. The meeting will be held on Wednesday 11th of June at 8:45am in the Administration Office. All in our community are welcome and it would be great to see some new faces come and support the new P & F Committee.
