From The Principal
Dear Families,
On Thursday this week, members of our Year Six class made their way to St John Bosco College in Piara Waters to honour the Pilgrimage of the Migrant Jubilee Cross.
This cross, which is made out of Australian wood and crafted beautifully into the shape of a boat with the Southern Cross as a mast, holds special significance for our community, given the number of people in our community born outside of Australia. The cross is a gift from the migrant communities around the country, to honour the contributions of migrants to Catholic parishes and schools.
While the Liturgy was very special, with our children sharing the Prayers of the Faithful beautifully, the cross itself was fascinating. The cross contained relics of the Holy Family in the form of fragments from the crib of Jesus, strands from the veil worn by Mary, as well as strands from the cloak of Joseph, all of which were borrowed from a Catholic Church in Nazareth. The cross also contained wood from the original coffin of Saint Mary MacKillop, and the children were fascinated by what they were seeing and the story associated with the cross.
We thank all in the community of St John Bosco College, Piara Waters, for making us feel so welcome at the College.
Mother’s Day @ St Emilie’s Reminder – The Morning of Friday the 8th of May
On Wednesday this week, an email was sent to the community with details for the Mother’s Day Celebration this week. This email included a booking form, which is essential for families to book a time to come to school and take part in the art activity on offer together.
As was the case in 2026, a morning tea will also be on offer for mothers and mother figures to help themself after their time together with their children. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited during the sessions, and as was the case in 2025, we are offering early bird sessions from 7:30am for those mothers and mothers and mother figures who have to work on Friday the 8th of May. On the day we will combine all the names from our booking site and have a raffle. The major prize is an Entertainment Card voucher, and the minor prizes are flowers.
A reminder that while we would love to accommodate grandparents, aunties, cousins and other significant women, there can only be one booking per family.
To help with the morning, we are putting a call out to all of the fathers and father figures in our community who can spare even a little bit of time during the morning to come in and spoil our guests of honour. So far, we only have two fathers who have put their hands up to assist, and we are certainly looking for more assistance. Fathers and father figures, if you are able to assist, please email me at chris.burns@cewa.edu.au
Parent Circle
Parent Circle will once again be on offer for parents in our community who wish to connect on a regular basis. Parents and friends are more than welcome to come to all sessions, or just to come to those that they can make.
The dates for Parent Circle in Term Two are as below:
Thursday 7th of May – Morning Tea
Thursday 21st of May – Cooking Demonstration
Thursday 4th of June – Doughnut Decorating
Thursday 2nd of July – Staff Presentation
The Parent Circle catch ups will take place in the Small Hall directly after drop off. It would be great to see some new faces come along for a cuppa and some morning tea.
Year Six Cricket Carnival
This Thursday, our school will be represented by a Year Six Girls and Year Six Boys Cricket Team at the annual Cricket Carnival to be held at Sutherlands Park. The children will be involved in several games in a 20/20 style format.
We wish all of our budding cricketers all the very best for the day.
Three Week Mid Year Break 2027
Late last year, community consultation across our Catholic system of schools was sought about the potential for a three week mid year break to be introduced across CEWA schools in 2027. The feedback from the replies received by CEWA has been strongly in favour of such a move, and in 2027, the midterm break between Term Two and Term Three will be extended from two weeks to three weeks.
The extension of the mid year break is hoped to increase wellbeing across the community, improve academic outcomes and increase student attendance.
Across the year, although there are five additional days being added to the holiday break between Term Two and Term Three, children will only actually have one less contact day at school overall. The rest of the days will be made up through an earlier start in January 2027, as well as the absorption of two Pupil Free Days, which will hopefully minimise any impact on families.
For now, it is important that families are aware that the first day back for children in 2027 will be on Thursday, the 28th of January. This may have an impact on the travel plans of families.
When looking at term dates for 2027, please be aware not to follow the term dates for the WA Public Schools, as this information will now be different from St Emilie’s.
Further information on the three week mid year break will be shared with the community as the year rolls on.
Kindy Enrolment 2027
It is that time of year when we are starting to call for Kindy enrolments for 2027. If you have a child who is due to attend Kindy next year, or you know someone who has a child that age, please encourage them to submit an application as soon as possible. Our Kindy program has proved to be extremely popular over the last few years, and it is advised that parents and carers submit an application sooner rather than later.
Three Year Old Kindy 2027
I am pleased to share that once again in 2027, our school will be offering a Three Year Old Kindy Program for children who turn three in 2027. Further information will be shared with school families about how you can enrol your child in this program.
Term Two P & F Community Meeting
In 2026, the school will continue with the model for P & F Meetings, which was introduced in 2025. That is, each term, there will be one P & F Meeting dedicated to the P & F Committee for planning time, and there will be one P & F Meeting open to the whole community, where we sincerely invite as many people from our community to attend to share ideas, and find out how they can assist with upcoming P & F events.
This term, the P & F Community Meeting will take place on Thursday, the 25th of June @ 8:45am in the Administration Office. Please come on down for a cuppa and light morning tea to find out about all things P & F.
Before School Soccer with Junior Goals
A reminder that on Thursdays this term, Junior Goals is offering specialised soccer training before school each Thursday morning. Please see below in our ‘Wider Community’ section for the flyer and find the link to join here.

Term Three Father’s Day BBQ & Open Classrooms – Save the Date!
In 2026, the traditional Father’s Day Breakfast event and the Open Night event will be rolled into one event, which will take place on the afternoon of Thursday, the 3rd of September. This time of year, typically at St Emilie’s, and in other schools in the lead up to Father’s Day, is very busy. Often, it can be tricky for families to create time to attend the Father’s Day Breakfast and Open Classrooms separately, while at the same time, creating time to attend events in other schools around this time.
By rolling the Father’s Day BBQ & Open Classrooms into one event, we are hoping to ensure that as many fathers and father figures as possible can get to school to be spoiled, alongside their families, while at the same time, being provided with an opportunity to view the terrific learning that is on display in the classrooms. While families are doing their walk around to view the classrooms, other families will be enjoying their BBQ dinner, as well as spending the time catching up with other families at the school, in what we hope is a real community centred atmosphere on the evening.
Given this event is in Term Three, details have not been finalised, however, we ask that you make a date in your diary for the afternoon of Thursday, the 3rd of September, to join us for a bite to eat to celebrate fathers and father figures, and for open Classrooms.
Staff Spotlight
As shared earlier in the term, this term we have been joined by Ms Giordana Macri who will be joining the Year One Blue class on Monday, and the Year Two Blue Class on Thursday.
Ms Macri has kindly shared some information with our community, which can be found in the profile below.
Welcome to St Emilie’s Ms Macri.
Congratulations to Mrs Leavy
I am delighted to share that Mrs Leavy became a grandparent for the very first time last week with the arrival of her beautiful little grandson James. Mrs Leavy has slipped into life as a grandparent seamlessly, with our community now referring to her as ‘Nonna Leavy’. Baby James and both parents are going well, and Mrs Leavy has been wearing a very proud Nonna grin all week. Congratulations to Mrs Leavy and the Leavy family.

URSTRONG
Empathy
This month in URSTRONG, we are focusing on a really powerful friendship skill, empathy.
Empathy means “feeling with someone.” It’s when we don’t just notice how someone feels, we actually try to understand and connect with it.
It’s like stepping into someone else’s shoes and asking yourself, “How would I feel if that were me?”
At school, we are surrounded by people all day, in class, at recess, at lunch. Most of the time this feels fun and easy. But sometimes, people can feel left out, hurt, or even invisible.
And here’s the important part, we don’t always see those feelings on the outside.
Someone might be:
- standing alone at lunch
- not getting picked in a game
- or feeling left out of a friendship group
Even if they don’t say it, those feelings are real. This is where empathy comes in. Empathy helps us pause, notice and choose to care!
It helps us become what we call upstanders, not bystanders.
An upstander is someone who:
- invites someone to join in
- checks in with a friend
- includes others, even when it’s not their usual group
Sometimes, the smallest actions can make the biggest difference.
In URSTRONG, we also talk about our Inner Ninja, that calm, wise voice inside us that helps us make kind and strong choices.
Your Inner Ninja might say:
- “Go and include them.”
- “Ask if they’re okay.”
- “Think about how they might be feeling.”
And when we listen to that voice, we build friendships that are kind AND strong.
So this month, we challenge you to look around, notice others and choose one small act of empathy.
Because when we choose empathy, we help everyone feel like they belong and that’s what makes our school such a strong and caring community.

Fruit of the Holy Spirit
Gentleness
As we continue our journey of growing in the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, this week we continue to turn our attention to Gentleness—a virtue that often speaks the loudest through the quietest actions.
Gentleness is not weakness. In fact, it takes great strength to remain calm, patient and kind—especially when situations feel challenging. Gentleness reflects Jesus’ way of being: meeting others with compassion, guiding with love, and listening with an open heart.
When we practise gentleness, we create spaces where people feel safe, valued, and understood. It allows the St Emilie’s community to flourish in kindness and respect.
I Am Grateful…
Gratitude and gentleness go hand in hand. When we pause to recognise the blessings in our lives—big or small—we naturally become more patient, understanding, and gentle with others.
This week, we invite families to try incorporating a simple “I am grateful…” moment each day. Gratitude shapes our hearts, rewires our minds, and encourages us to treat others with greater care.
Gentleness in Action – Examples for Home & School
Here are some practical ways our students (and all of us!) can show gentleness this week:
At School
- Using a calm voice when solving problems or disagreements.
- Including others in games, especially those who may be feeling left out.
- Handling school equipment carefully as a sign of respect for shared spaces.
- Encouraging words: offering a kind comment to someone having a tough day.
At Home
- Helping with chores without being asked—or by doing them kindly when asked.
- Speaking respectfully to siblings, even when frustrated.
- Showing patience during busy mornings or routines.
- Caring for pets gently, modelling responsibility and compassion.
In the Community
- Holding the door for others.
- Thanking people who serve us—shop assistants, coaches, bus drivers, parish volunteers.
- Checking in on a neighbour or grandparent.
Holy Spirit, help us to be gentle in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Fill our hearts with gratitude so that we may recognise Your blessings
and share Your love with others each day. Amen

A Note from the School Health Nurse
Caitlin Amos
Welcome to the new school year. I am the nurse that will be visiting your school throughout the year.
School Health nurses support children’s healthy development and wellbeing in primary schools. We offer a free health check (School Entry Health Assessment) for all children in the year that they start school. You may receive a School Entry Health Assessment form via your child’s teacher. If you sign and return it, we can check your child’s vision, hearing, teeth, growth, and development.
School Health Nurses provide feedback and support to families and schools after assessment and connect you with services in the community. We promote parenting programs and help with health care plans for students with identified and chronic health needs. Additionally, we may provide advice and support for some areas of the curriculum delivery on request by the school.
Further information about the role of the nurse in primary schools can be found here:
