From The Principal

In loving memory of Layna

Dear Families,

As communicated earlier in the week, this Monday, the Funeral Mass for Layna will take place at the St Emilie de Vialar Parish Church commencing at 12:30pm.

I would ask that all parents and carers read the details sent in an email from myself on Wednesday, as there is important information contained in this correspondence. Please note that there will be a large staff presence at the Funeral Mass on Monday, meaning that Monday will not be a typical day here at school, and that many classes will have relief staff in the spaces for the day. Parents and carers are most welcome to keep their children at home on Monday should they wish.

In the lead up to the Funeral Mass for Layna, I ask that all in our community continue to keep Layna, her family and friends, and all in our community in their thoughts and prayers.

75th Anniversary of the Canonisation of Saint Emilie de Vialar
This Wednesday, the 24th of June, will be 75 years to the day of the Canonisation of Saint Emilie de Vialar. The Canonisation of Saint Emilie de Vialar took place in 1951, and this Wednesday is a very significant day for the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition, and our school, given that our school is part of the first parish in the world to be named after Saint Emilie de Vialar.

For further information about Saint Emilie de Vialar in an article from The Record which details information about the opening of our Church, please find the link here.

Reconciliation
I would also ask that you keep the children from the parish, including our Year Three children, in your thoughts and prayers as they look to celebrate their First Reconciliation during the week.

For those children from Saint Emilie’s who will be celebrating this Sacrament, Mr Munro has emailed some details to families.

Mid-Year Reports Parent Information Session: Thursday, the 25th of June
As was shared in earlier editions of the Weekly Reminders, we will be hosting a Parent Information Session for parents to provide further information for Mid Year Reports, as well as outline some of the changes to these reports in 2026.

The time and date for this session is Thursday, the 25th of June at 5:00pm. The session will take place in the Learning Hub.

Cross Country Training: Thursday Mornings (Year Four to Year Six)
For the following remaining Thursdays of term, children from Year Four to Year Six are welcome to join for Cross Country Training. Training sessions will be facilitated by Mr Lowry. Training will commence at 8:00am on the School Oval.

Children who are participating in Cross Country Training are asked to bring a spare pair of runners and socks, given that the ground will be dewy in the morning. If the weather is shaping up to be adverse, training may be cancelled. Parents and carers will be advised of any cancellations via text as early as can be.

Training is only available for children between Year Four and Year Six. Younger siblings will need to remain with parents until the usual duty of care start time at 8:20am.

Year Five and Year Four Assembly: Change of Date
As was communicated to the community last week, the Year Five Assembly was postponed. The new date for the Year Five Assembly will be Friday the 26th of June.

The Year Four Assembly will now take place on Friday the 23rd of October.

Kindy Enrolment 2027
It is that time of year when we are starting to call for Kindy enrolments for 2027. If you have a child who is due to attend Kindy next year, or you know someone who has a child that age, please encourage them to submit an application as soon as possible. Our Kindy program has proved to be extremely popular over the last few years, and it is advised that parents and carers submit an application sooner rather than later.

Three Year Old Kindy 2027
I am pleased to share that once again in 2027, our school will be offering a Three Year Old Kindy Program for children who turn three in 2027. Further information will be shared with school families about how you can enrol your child in this program.

Electricity Work Outside School: 20th of June to 24th of June
Please be advised that there will be some work on cabling taking place outside of the school grounds this week. This has nothing to do with the school, however, parents and carers may see some additional vehicles and workers around the boundary of the school early next week.

URSTRONG

🌧️ Rainy Day Friends ☀️

Winter has just begun and the rain will keep on coming. What better time to talk about the idea of a Rainy Day Friend. At St Emilie’s, we are continuing to support children in building strong and caring friendships.

A Rainy Day Friend isn’t someone who simply holds your umbrella when it rains (though that’s nice too!). A Rainy Day Friend is the person who shows up when life feels a little stormy, when things don’t go to plan, when your child feels left out, or when they just need someone to listen.

It’s not about fixing all the problems; it’s about being there, showing kindness, and letting someone know they are not alone.

We have been encouraging students to:

  • Ask, “Are you okay?”
  • Offer a smile or a kind word
  • Sit with someone who looks lonely
  • Invite others to join in their game

💡 Conversation starter at home:

You might like to ask your child:

  • “Who has been a Rainy Day Friend to you?”
  • “How could you be a Rainy Day Friend to someone else this week?”

Together, we can help our children understand that kindness doesn’t have to wait for a storm, even the smallest gestures can be a ray of sunshine for someone’s day. 🌟

Self Control

“I Can Wait”

Self‑control helps us pause, think, and choose what is right, even when something feels hard, exciting, or frustrating. It reminds us that we don’t always have to act straight away—sometimes, the best choice is to wait.

When we practise self‑control, we show respect for ourselves and for others. We become calmer, kinder, and more thoughtful in the way we speak and act. With God’s help, we can learn to say, “I can wait”, trusting that good things come at the right time.

What Does “I Can Wait” Look Like?

Self‑control is a skill we grow every day. Some everyday examples include:

  • Waiting for your turn to speak instead of calling out
  • Staying calm when something feels unfair
  • Walking away from an argument rather than reacting in anger
  • Being patient while waiting for help from a teacher or parent
  • Choosing kind words, even when you feel upset or disappointed

Each time we choose to wait and respond wisely, we are letting the Holy Spirit guide our actions.

The Bible reminds us that self‑control is a gift that helps us live like Jesus:

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” (James 1:19)

“For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self‑control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Holy Spirit,
Help us to pause and think before we act.
Give us patience when it is hard to wait
and kindness when we feel frustrated.
Help us to make choices that reflect Your love.
Amen.

Attendance

Attendance Procedures

When your child/ren are absent from school please either email the teacher firstname.surname@cewa.edu.au and stemiliesadmin@cewa.edu.au
or

Use the Absentee Form on our Website.

It is a legal requirement for parents to contact the
School regarding any student absences. Parents should email the teacher and include admin by 9.00am on the day of the absence with the following information:

  • Full name of student
  • Year group
  • Reason for absence and expected length of absence
  • Your name and relationship to the student
  • Parents are required to inform the school if the absence is expected to be extended.

Absentee Long Term

It is a requirement for parents to complete the Leave of Absence Notification Form when taking planned extended holidays during the term.

Parents are required to return the below form to Administration prior to the absence.

Leaving Early

1. While we understand it is difficult to make specialist appointments outside of school hours, we strongly encourage you to do so where possible.

2. Please ensure you are emailing the class teacher along with admin, if your child is going to be taken out of school early for an appointment.

Extra Curricular

Keyed Up Music

St Emilie’s partners with Key Up Music to offer after school Music lessons.

Keyed Up Music will be teaching guitar, keyboard, voice, violin, and drum lessons after school. Please head to the Keyed Up Music Tab on our Website for more information.

Parent Reading

This week, under the Parent Reading heading, we have included an article titled, ‘Here Be Dragons’ by Dr Justin Coulson.

Resilience feels hard and uncomfortable and uncertain. That’s the point. That discomfort is where the growth is. Kids don’t become brave by watching us slay dragons. They become brave by slaying a few themselves. So the next time a dragon shows up in your child’s life, resist the urge to charge in. Ask what they think they should do. Offer your perspective. Stay nearby. And then let them carry that sword and shield.

A Note from the School Health Nurse
Caitlin Amos

Welcome to the new school year. I am the nurse that will be visiting your school throughout the year.

School Health nurses support children’s healthy development and wellbeing in primary schools. We offer a free health check (School Entry Health Assessment) for all children in the year that they start school. You may receive a School Entry Health Assessment form via your child’s teacher. If you sign and return it, we can check your child’s vision, hearing, teeth, growth, and development.

School Health Nurses provide feedback and support to families and schools after assessment and connect you with services in the community. We promote parenting programs and help with health care plans for students with identified and chronic health needs. Additionally, we may provide advice and support for some areas of the curriculum delivery on request by the school.

Further information about the role of the nurse in primary schools can be found here:
