From The Principal

Dear Families,

From all in our community, I would like to wish all of the mothers and mother figures in our community a very happy Mother’s Day for Sunday.

What a beautiful morning we shared in our community this morning with our mothers and mother figures from across the school coming to school to create some beautiful art, and more importantly, some long lasting memories with their children. Mothers and mother figures, it was so lovely to have you with us on site today, blending in seamlessly into the usual teaching and learning routines here at St Emilie’s.

We hoped that you enjoyed your Mother’s Day here at St Emilie’s and the lovely spread of morning tea that was laid out this morning.

I would like to use this opportunity to say a huge congratulations to our raffle winners, Allyson on taking home the main prize of the Entertainment Card Membership, and Anne and Kaela for winning the very lovely bunches of flowers.

Thank you also to the fathers who made themselves available at different times to welcome the mothers and mother figures to school, ensure that the art materials were in place, direct our visitors where to go, and look after our mothers and mother figures during morning tea. You did a great job!

Thank you also to our amazing staff, who as always, ensured that all who were on site this morning were welcomed with open arms and who ensured that the children were ready to go with their mothers for their sessions.

To all of the mothers and mother figures in our community, and for those mothers and mother figures on staff, I wish you a happy Mother’s Day for Sunday!

Reconciliation Workshops
On Wednesday the 20th of May, preparation for children and families around the Sacrament of Reconciliation commences, with Reconciliation Workshops being offered at 4:00pm and again at 5:15pm. Information on how to book the workshops was sent home via email by Mr Munro earlier in the term. If your child is making their First Reconciliation this year and you have not booked a session, you are asked to please do so by contacting the School Administration Office.

I would ask that all in our community please keep the children, families, staff and catechists from our parish in their thoughts and prayers as they prepare to celebrate First Reconciliation.

Changes to Mid Year Reports – Parent Session Date TBC
As is the usual practice at St Emilie’s, at the end of this term, each child from Pre-Primary to Year Six will receive a Mid Year Report that is addressed to parents. In 2026, Mid Year and End of Year Reports will look slightly different, to align with the expectations set by the Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Most noticeably, in 2026, children will only receive a grade for the individual Learning Area, not all of the Strands that are found within that Learning Area.

For example, in English, children will receive an overall grade for the English learning Area, but will no longer receive a grade for Reading, Writing and Listening and Speaking individually.

To assist parents with understanding the Mid Year Reports, a parent session will be offered to parents to come and join the School Leadership Team. A time and date for this session will be shared with the community shortly.

Catholic School Advisory Members 2026
I am delighted to share that our St Emilie’s Catholic School Advisory Council has co-opted three new members to the committee for 2026. These new members will partner with the School Leadership Team, including Mrs Norris and Father Jean Noel, and our current advisory council members, Chris Day, Beau Jose and Stefanie Malelo. Joining us on the advisory council this term, I would like to warmly welcome Samantha Chapman, Jessica Francis and Arvinder Kaur.

Thank you to all those who continue to give up their own time to join the council. Your generosity of time, spirit and expertise is greatly appreciated.

Laudato Si, NAIDOC & Science Week – Scheduled for August
In 2026, Laudato Si, NAIDOC and Science Week will be combined as the school places its focus for the week on Science shared with us through our First Nation people. This week, to be held in August, will focus on looking after Whadjuk Nyoongar Boodja, with a whole school project being planned to enhance our current bush area.

Further details will be shared about this week in the coming months.

School Audit – Friday the 15th of May
Please be advised that on Friday, the 15th of May, the school Administration Team, as well as members of the School Leadership Team, will be involved in an Audit on the school site. While there will be staff available in the Administration Office, we ask that, if you can, please avoid the Administration Office where possible so we can give our full attention to our visiting auditors.

Parent Circle
Parent Circle will once again be on offer for parents in our community who wish to connect on a regular basis. Parents and friends are more than welcome to come to all sessions, or just to come to those that they can make.

The dates for Parent Circle in Term Two are as below:

Thursday 21st of May – Cooking Demonstration

Thursday 4th of June – Doughnut Decorating

Thursday 2nd of July – Staff Presentation

The Parent Circle catch ups will take place in the Small Hall directly after drop off. It would be great to see some new faces come along for a cuppa and some morning tea.

Kindy Enrolment 2027

If you have a child who is due to attend Kindy next year, or you know someone who has a child that age, please encourage them to submit an application as soon as possible. Our Kindy program has proved to be extremely popular over the last few years, and it is advised that parents and carers submit an application sooner rather than later.

Three Year Old Kindy 2027
I am pleased to share that once again in 2027, our school will be offering a Three Year Old Kindy Program for children who turn three in 2027. Further information will be shared with school families about how you can enrol your child in this program.

URSTRONG

Big Emotion Potion

This week in Year Two, students participated in their URSTRONG lesson focusing on understanding and managing BIG EMOTIONS. Together, they discussed how everyone experiences strong feelings from time to time, and that learning healthy ways to respond to these emotions is an important part of developing resilience, self-awareness, and positive friendships.

The children explored a range of emotions such as feeling worried, jealous, frustrated, angry, sad, overwhelmed, etc. Through class discussions and activities, students learnt how these emotions can affect our bodies, thoughts, and behaviour, and that all feelings are normal and okay to have.

As part of the lesson, each child created their own “BIG EMOTION POTION”.  Creating a recipe for a collection of calming and self-regulation strategies they can use when emotions begin to feel too big.

Some of the strategies included taking deep breaths, counting to ten, talking to a trusted adult or friend, drawing, taking a quiet break, using positive self-talk, stretching, or focusing on happy thoughts.

We are very proud of the thoughtful discussions and reflections shared by the students throughout the lesson.

Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Peacefulness

Fruit of the Spirit: Peacefulness

One of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit is peace. True peace is more than quiet or calm—it is a deep trust that God is with us, even in busy or challenging moments. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, we become peace‑filled people who bring gentleness, patience and understanding to our classrooms, playgrounds and homes.

Living the Fruit of Peace

Peace is not something we keep to ourselves—it is something we share. When students choose kind words, listen to one another, forgive quickly, or help resolve a problem calmly, they are living the Fruit of the Spirit. A peace‑filled heart helps build a school where everyone feels safe, valued and loved.

Choosing Peace Every Day

Being peace‑filled doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means choosing calm instead of anger, kindness instead of arguing, and forgiveness instead of holding a grudge. When we invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts, He helps us make peaceful choices each day—especially when it’s hard.

Peace Begins Within

In a fast‑paced world, peace can feel hard to find. The Fruit of the Holy Spirit reminds us that peace starts within our hearts. When we slow down, pray and trust God, we become peaceful people who bring steadiness and reassurance to our children and to one another.

“Blessed are the peacemakers.” (Matthew 5:9)

Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. The Fruit of the Spirit—peace—helps us do this by guiding our thoughts, words and actions. Whether it’s resolving a disagreement kindly or offering comfort to someone who is upset, each peaceful action reflects God’s love in our community.

A Peace‑Filled Prayer

Holy Spirit,
Fill our hearts with Your peace.
Help us to speak kindly, act gently,
and bring calm wherever we go.
May our school always be a place of peace.
Amen.

Extra Curricular

Keyed Up Music

St Emilie’s partners with Key Up Music to offer after school Music lessons.

Parent Reading

This week, under the Parent Reading heading, we have included an article titled, ‘Don’t Burn the Chicken’ by Dr Justin Coulson.

Children are exquisitely sensitive to what we actually believe about them. When we hover, intervene, and push, the unspoken message – however loving the intention – is: I’m not sure you can do this without me. When we step back with confidence, the message changes. And so does the child.

A Note from the School Health Nurse
Caitlin Amos

Welcome to the new school year. I am the nurse that will be visiting your school throughout the year.

School Health nurses support children’s healthy development and wellbeing in primary schools. We offer a free health check (School Entry Health Assessment) for all children in the year that they start school. You may receive a School Entry Health Assessment form via your child’s teacher. If you sign and return it, we can check your child’s vision, hearing, teeth, growth, and development.

School Health Nurses provide feedback and support to families and schools after assessment and connect you with services in the community. We promote parenting programs and help with health care plans for students with identified and chronic health needs. Additionally, we may provide advice and support for some areas of the curriculum delivery on request by the school.

Further information about the role of the nurse in primary schools can be found here:
