Year 6 Leadership

  • · News · Year 6 Blue · Year 6 Gold

This week we presented our “Super” Assembly to the school community based on leadership lessons from Superheroes. Here are a few of the leadership qualities well known superheroes can teach us:

Lesson 1: Leaders reconcile differences and work as a team
X-Men (X-Women)

team

Lesson 2: Good leaders are calm, peaceful and compassionate
(Wonder Woman)

quotes-compassion

Lesson 3: Great leaders don’t let their gifts go to waste and they encourage others

Spider-Man (Spider-Girl and Spider-Boy)

encourage

We had to use many skills such as teamwork, accepting differences, using our gifts and talents and encouraging others to help prepare and perform the assembly.

Our obvious talents were on show for all to see, but the most important lesson we learnt is that we all have some leadership qualities within us. Our challenge is to identify them and use them for the greater good!

Receiving our leadership badges was a proud moment for us all and they will be a visual reminder of our roles and responsibilities at St Emilie’s this year.

We are really looking forward to being leaders together at Camp very soon!

We encourage you to watch this great clip about being a ‘Hero’.

Putting the Pressure on Pressure with Mr Sayer

Today 6B had a visit from Mr Sayer our mentor from the Scientists in Schools initiative.

Mr Sayer facilitated our lesson on force, mass and measurement.  He used a variety of materials to demonstrate the concepts and students then worked in their cooperative teams to investigate water pressure.

Each team had a 2L bottle that had three holes in it.  We had to investigate and then provide an explanation as to why the water flowed out at different rates.

Dear Families,

Just a  note to ask that you please keep a family who is going through a particularly tough time in regard to their health in your daily prayers.

Some wonderful families who are close to this family and the situation have quietly rallied together and are providing meals and practical support.

Father Chien is also unwell at this time and our thoughts are also very much with him as he rests and recuperates.

We will let you know if there is anything you can do to help out, however in the meantime one thing we can all do right now is tap into the power of prayer.

Quietly including this beautiful family, Fr Chien and all families in our community who may be suffering at this time in our everyday prayers, is special and very much appreciated.

Our prayers don’t need to be fancy.. just simple and heartfelt …

Luke 11
“When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask Him.
“Therefore pray in this manner:
Our Father who is in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come;
Your will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from all evil.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.

pray each day

Thank you Mums and Dads!

Dear Parents

All staff have been so positive about your Two-Way Parent Meetings this week – thank you most sincerely for arriving on time and for the wonderful way you have each engaged with your teachers – a terrific community effort!

Parent representation at these interviews has been very high indeed – which means you have had the wonderful opportunity to ask questions and to clarify and listen to how your child is interacting socially and emotionally with others, as well as how they are progressing academically.

communicate

While it is easy to hear all the positives about our children, it is understandably not so easy to listen when an area of challenge or an aspect of their behaviour may be of some concern at this point in time.

The important thing to remember is that all staff have your child’s very best interests at heart.  Just because the teacher might point out that they have observed, for example, your child experiencing considerable difficulty managing their emotions when playing sport; or that they have presented themselves as inappropriately defending exclusive friendships; or that they are in the habit of consistently talking and distracting others more than  engaging in their learning, and so on – it isn’t something to panic about or become defensive over.

Teacher feedback is very valuable to wise and discerning parents.  When you demonstrate to your child that you really value, respect and support their teacher, it immediately makes them sit up, think and take notice!

Calmly discuss the area of concern with your child, listen to their challenges and offer some good advice, as well as support them to set positive goals for the future. Just remember that when your child is relaying their story they are quite often (not always)  leaving out a number of other important details… and this is part of growing up and learning!

The worst thing a parent can do however, is think there is – ‘a teacher conspiracy’!

trust

While it is far easier for a teacher to ignore and not bring things to parent attention, a good school genuinely helps children to learn from mistakes, to grow as people, to see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves and to understand that values such as honesty, co-operation, kindness, respect, compassion, forgiveness, integrity, flexibility, generosity, a sense of humour, self-control, and more … are what will ultimately help them and others to thrive in school, and to thrive in life!

flourish

Our children are relying on us as significant adults in their lives to be good role models and people who champion the often difficult and challenging path of what is good, right and just.

Being a good parent requires that we too continue to grow as people each and every day… and this requires an ongoing and sustained effort…

Lent is a good time to reflect upon any obstacles to our own growth as Christ followers and to make a plan for perhaps tweaking our own parenting choices so they better align with what Jesus would say and do!

Lent 6

Take care everyone, we are indeed blessed to be in a community where we can support one another in our parenting and in creating young people who go into the world knowing they can make a positive difference!

Kind regards

Tania Thuijs

This fortnight in Cultural studies we have been preparing for open night by creating original art pieces and learning about Vietnamese festival clothes and their customs.

Don’t forget to come along on Open Night in Week 8 to see all our hard work in action!

Our Year 1 and 2 classes have been trying on the traditional Non La vietnamese hats ans well asseeing how they were made out of traditional materials on You tube clips.

Year 6 Leadership Day

  • February 20, 2015
  • harvey.maria
  • · Year 6 Blue · Year 6 Gold

On Wednesday, 18th February, as part of our Year Six Leadership Day, students got the opportunity to meet with Mrs Kerry Troost from Caritas Australia. The day involved lots of team building activities, discussion about what it means to be a leader in the eyes of the Church and ideas on how we can put these skills into practice at St Emilie’s.

Our opening activity required us to work together as a team to navigate our way over some ‘stepping stones’. We quickly realised that we needed to establish some basic rules and ways to communicate in order to succeed, and eventually we were able to get to the end!

11007446_10155195120730265_689787531_n 11008941_10155195088260265_763097827_n

Next, we talked about the different traits and qualities of leaders. We agreed that the most important characteristic of a Christian leader is that they are willing to serve others. Jesus was the perfect example of this as he served, welcomed and helped all people. He served by listening, being kind, compassionate and understanding, helping, praying, teaching and guiding, and his greatest service was giving his life for us. We are called to be good leaders by following the example of Jesus and serving and helping others to the very best of our ability, and that’s what we plan on doing this year to ‘give back’ to our school community.

We also discussed people in our lives who we felt displayed the qualities we think are important in showing strong leadership. Some of these qualities were:

  • being understanding
  • friendliness
  • giving up time for others
  • being trustworthy
  • showing courage and honesty
  • showing forgiveness
  • actively making the right decisions for the good of all
  • being a positive role model

We learnt many things about the good work Caritas Australia does throughout the world. The Project Compassion theme this year is “Food For Life”. We watched a video that showed us some of the work being done around the globe, and in Australia, to assist people in having the resources and skills needed to have “Food For Life”. Our project compassion boxes have now been set up in our class as well as at home, and we are excited to play our part in helping those in need.

After lunch, it was time for some more team building activities. We had to call on our best problem solving and leadership skills to complete “The St Emilie’s Leadership Race”. Each team had to carefully follow instructions, and work together to complete challenges and find clues to complete the course in the fastest time. This was a fantastic opportunity to have some fun, and practise working cooperatively in a competitive, but friendly and respectful manner.

The day was fun and informative, and we learnt a lot about the types of things we need to do this year to be good leaders at St Emilie’s. We’ve already shown that we can be great leaders through our initial work in our year six committees, but we know that after our experiences on leadership day, camp and throughout the rest of the year, we will be even better suited to lead our school as the year progresses!

Don’t Miss Out!

Dear Parents

As advertised at the start of term, in an effort to support you and your parenting, which we all know is a big and important job, we have organised for a well-known and highly regarded guest speaker to visit St Emilie’s in a little over a week’s time.

It is most important that we get enough people there however, to make the cost of securing Greg viable, so please ring the Office asap or by next Friday the 20th February at the latest,to confirm your attendance, thank you.

Please bring friends and neighbours who have children too!

Unfortunately if opportunities such as these are not well supported by the community, we are less likely to offer them in the future, so please get behind your school’s efforts to offer you quality opportunities such as this one.

Wednesday 25th February – St Emilie’s Guest Speaker – Mr Greg Mitchell Wk 4

Mr Greg Mitchell is nationally and internationally known for his high-energy, interactive and entertaining sessions with children and parents alike.

Session: 7.00pm – 8.15pmish in school hall

This presentation is a wonderful opportunity to invest in your parenting! Pop in to the St Emilie’s School Hall for just over an an hour of listening to a really engaging speaker. Bring friends too!

Cost: $5.00 – ideally please pay via the Office and have your name recorded, so that we have an idea of numbers (yes, you can pay at the door if you decide to come at the last minute but we would still appreciate a call to the Office to confirm numbers, thankyou!)

What is the evening about?

Children today live in a world that is more negative and judgmental than ever before, a world where their weaknesses are exaggerated, their strengths over examined and their failures are posted on Facebook.

Parents today need a regular dose of positivity to prevent their children falling into the thought pattern that goes something like “If you knew me as I really am you wouldn’t like me so I’ll pretend to be someone else!”

This entertaining, humorous and challenging presentation explores raising children through the concepts of resilience, success and progress.

Please read this flyer for more information about this great opportunity below:
