First Aid Incursion

  • September 11, 2021
  • Dan Naden
  • · Year 5 · Year 5 Blue · Year 5 Gold

This week, we had the chance to brush up on our first aid skills. Hopefully we never need to use these skills, but in case we do, we revised the DRS ABCD acronym and practised how to put our friends into the recovery position in an emergency.

Our instructor also told us about the St John of God FIRST RESPONDERS app, which we would highly recommend downloading!

Dreams of Freedom

This term, our whole school integrated focus is Social Justice.

The text Dreams of Freedom is a text that we have explored as a year level. This text was published by Amnesty International and features poems and illustrations from various authors.

We chose to focus on one of the poems in the text by Harriet Tubman, with an amazing illustration by Mordicai Gerstein, that explored the juxtaposition of slavery and freedom.

We discussed how thoughts and emotions were conveyed by the illustrator through careful choice of images, colours and symbols.

We were all inspired to create our own artwork that tackled one of the social justice topics we have covered this term, freedom to have peace, freedom to have a home and freedom to express yourself.

Check out some of our masterpieces below. You can see the rest of them at Open Night in Week Nine. We definitely recommend you read this book!

Fraction Frenzy

  • · Year 5 · Year 5 Blue · Year 5 Gold

This term we have been learning about fractions in our Number and Algebra sessions.

One of the warm up games we play is called ‘Bump it Up’. This game uses a large dice with fractions on it. Players need to find fractions on the playing board which are greater than, less than or equal to fraction on the die. We will have this one out for Open Night!

We are beginning to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and then we will see if we can add fractions with different denominators!

Speaking of different denominators, we have found it challenging to place fractions on a number line when the denominators are not the same. We are becoming more confident when simplifying fractions to an easier form to work with.

Some of us are working through some differentiated challenges which require us to problem solve in teams.

Many of us had said that fractions and decimals were our biggest challenge in maths, before we started this unit. We have still got a lot to learn, but we are feeling more confident with our skills than ever before!

This post was written by Ninkea, Nate and Mrs Armistead.

Our Front Office Display for Term Three – Reading and Social Justice

  • August 2, 2021

This term in Year Five, our novel study focus is Boy Overboard. This text was written by Morris Gleitzman in 2002. We are only a few chapters in so far, but so far we have had some interesting discussions about the difference between life for a child in Australia compared to Afghanistan, where the main character Jamal is from.

This text ties in nicely with our whole school focus of Social Justice, where in Year Five we are exploring the rights of children and what equality really means. Many of us have shared stories and facts in our conversations about social justice, which helps us to link this topic to real life and the real world around us. We are excited to learn more about this important topic! Can you believe that this ties in with our poetry unit too? Stay tuned for some awesome social justice themed poems that will feature in our Open Night display in Week Nine!

Each week we will read a number of chapters from Boy Overboard and then answer comprehension questions to check our understanding. In the front office we have displayed some of our work, showcasing what we know from this text so far.

As you can probably tell, we have hit the ground running in Year Five this term. Mrs Armistead, Mr Naden and our 5G prac teacher Mrs Martinez have a lot of interesting tasks in store for us and we can’t wait to share them with you throughout the term.

ANZAC Day in Year Five – In Flanders Fields

  • April 27, 2021
  • Louise Corkhill
  • · Year 5 · Year 5 Blue · Year 5 Gold

Last Friday we celebrated ANZAC Day as a school community.

In Year Five we read a special text called ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Norman Jorgensen & Brian Harrison-Lever.

The text tells the story of a soldier who, on Chirstmas Day saw a red robin tangled in wire struggling to get free in No Man’s Land. He risked his life to free the bird as the enemy watched on.

This text was the centre of a literature focus afternoon where we answered lots of questions about this great story. It also inspired us to create an ANZAC war medal in teams.

Check out some of our responses below!
