The Year 5’s and 6’s have made a great start in our MAI numeracy sessions where we have been exploring more about the relationship between multiplication and division. We have been working hard to learn our times tables with fun and with confidence!

Playing “Connect Three”. In partners, we took turns to turn over a card from the middle pile and answer the algorithm on the card. If we had the answer on our game board, we covered it with a counter. The first person to get three in a row, won.

Playing “More Group Matching”. Students match the corresponding multiplication algorithm with the visual and the numeral.

Playing “Coin Toss”. In this card game we made multiplication and division sums with one digit whole numbers. Heads = multiplication, Tails = division.

Playing “Turn the Tables”. The students had to roll 2 dice and correctly call out the answer to the multiplication sum made by the 2 numbers on the dice. Next they had the find the answer on the game board and cover it with a coloured counter. When a player had 4 counters in a row horizontally, diagonally or vertically they would win that round.

Playing “Card Calculations”. For this activity, we had to pick four cards and create a number sentence from them that would score us the most points. For example, 4, 5, 7, 2 might make the sentence “5 x 4 ÷ 2 – 7 = 3… 3 points ”Scores had to be single digits and after five rounds, we added our scores to find a winner!
