History of St Emilie’s
We’ve been busy in 3 Gold looking at the way that communities change over time and the ways that they remain the same (continuity). We have been excited by changes at St Emilie’s over the years, especially looking at aerial photos of the school site way back to 1953. We have spent this week looking CAREFULLY at changes in photo’s and putting them in order according to photographic evidence.
It has been really fun to talk to people who have been here for a long time and changes they can remember. Mrs Airey helped us by remembering what the building with the white roof was that was here before the school building. It was Father’s house and it was where the Year 3/4 block is built now! We are busy thinking of questions we are wondering about because next week we are going to interview one of the students who was at St Emilie’s when it first opened. We are hoping that she can find her ‘very tiny’ Pre-Primary uniform which is still the gold and blue colours that we have now and the same logo (continuity) … but the school hadn’t been named St Emilie’s yet – it was called Canning Vale Catholic Primary School and there were only about 40 students in the whole school (change)!
World Maths Day in Year 3
On Wednesday, the 23rd of March, the Year Three students participated in the ‘World Maths Day Challenge’ which is run by Mathletics.
For this challenge, we participated in live Mathletics games and our total score over 20 games were submitted to the competition.
Year 3 students needed to complete ten games on level 1, five games on level 2 and five games on level 3.
We had a lot of fun playing live Mathletics games against our friends, school and classmates, and even other students from all around the world!
The top 10 highest scorers in Year 3 at St Emilie’s were:
1. Matthew
2. Fiona
3. Noah
4. Josh C
5. Maya
6. Alexander
7. Thomas
8. Luka U
9. Annie
10. Eli
Matthew achieved an oustanding score of 571 points which put him in the top 200 students in the whole of Australia – well done on this fantastic achievement Matthew!
We had a great time participating in this competition and improving our mental maths skills!

Design Technologies in Year 3!
In Year Three we have been enjoying hands on learning in Design technologies!
We have explored the design process of ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, TEST, IMPROVE.
For this design process, our task was to try and make the longest paper chain possible. In teams of four or five, we thought carefully about ideas to help us make the longest paper chain possible and we then had to devise a plan about how we would achieve this.
Each team was given the same materials: two pieces of plain paper, 50cm of tape, a ruler and only 1 pair of scissors (which proved tricky with 4-5 team members)! We had to think about how to use our materials and time effectively.
Out first attempt in week 1 was a bit challenging, but it taught us a few important strategies for managing the task more effectively including:
- working together and supporting each other
- using small bits of tape
- folding paper to cut multiple strips
- cutting long, thin strips
- making two chains at a time
- ensuring all team members were helping
On our first attempt ever at this task, the longest paper chain was over a whopping 7m long…WOW! Well done team.
The final part of the design process is IMPROVE. So this week, we revisited our plans and used the strategies from our first attempt to try and make our paper chains even longer.
We enjoyed this hands on, challenging and fun task and we love Design Tech!

Welcome to Japanese at St Emilies!
Year Three Excursion
On Monday the 29th November the year Three classes attended The Fremantle Literacy Centre in Fremantle.
The Literature Centre is a unique place to nurture young people’s interest in reading and writing, using engaging techniques to explore and interpret literature. Uniquely located within the walls of the Old Fremantle Prison, it is the only centre of its kind in Australia.
During our visit the students had some wonderful learning opportunities such as hearing about the amazing story of Moondyne Joe, Western Australia’s real life outlaw hero. The students looked at the amazing artwork of Mark Greenwood, the author and illustrator of ‘The Legend of Moondyne Joe’. Next the students learned about the storybook titled, ‘Queen Celine’, a funny, eco-friendly, politically-relevant picture book by super-talent Matt Shanks.
After an engaging and fascinating time learning about so many interesting aspects of these amazing stories and the talents of these Australian authors the students travelled to Bibra Lake for some lunch and fun on the adventure playground. Thanks to the Pham Familiy’s Bibra Lake Lunch bar menu, we were spoilt with some delicious food. The students were lucky enough to have the whole playground to themselves.
Overall this was a wonderful and exciting learning experience that was made even more perfect by the wonderful cooperation and attention of our Year Three’s as well as the perfect sunny weather.
We had a ball and learnt a lot! 🙂
