Protective Behaviour-Being Safe

  • March 12, 2021
  • Simone McKenzie
  • · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

We read the stories I Can Be Safe, Franklin In the Dark and Franklin Gets Lost. We brainstormed how the characters were feeling when they were feeling safe and unsafe.

We then discussed all the emotions we feel when we feel safe or unsafe and talked about the places we feel the most safe. We used the iPads in pairs and took photos of our friends showing the different feelings with our facial expressions. We had so much fun!

This was a great opportunity for us to incorporate technology into our learning. We have learnt;

  • How to hold the iPad to take photos-to remove the cover before taking photos 🙂
  • Using the zoom function
  • How to delete photos

And, of course.. How to take selfies!

Helpful Hints Week 7

  • Parent Teacher Interviews continue in Week 7. It would be greatly appreciated if you could please be on time as each interview is scheduled for 10-12 minutes.
  • Please make sure the sight word book and readers remain in your child’s blue note folder. Folders are checked daily so make sure the note folder is brought to school everyday.

Exploring Place Value in Year One

Exploring Place Value in Year One

We have been busy working in groups during Maths rotations! Our focus has been place value…and we have been putting our number knowledge to the test!

Our ‘hands on’ activities have allowed us to…

  • Practice our number writing…some of us have challenged ourselves and have learnt numbers beyond 100!
  • Use hundreds, tens and ones blocks to represent numbers.
  • Use the language of smaller than, bigger than, greater than and less than to describe numbers.
  • Skip count in 10’s and 5’s…we are now learning to skip count in 2’s!
You might like to practice these at home.

We have enjoyed sharing ideas, working with our friends, cooperating and learning from each other!

Helpful Hints for Week 6

  •  Parent Teacher Interviews commence Monday of Week 6. It would be greatly appreciated if you could please be on time as each interview is scheduled for 10-12 minutes. We look forward to seeing everyone over the next two weeks.
  • The Year Ones will be attending the Year Three’s Assembly on Friday 12th March – please arrive on time as the Assembly will start at 8:45am.
Parents of Year Three children are invited to attend the assembly and if there are any spare seats after they are seated,  parents of other year levels may also attend.

See you tonight ! 🙂

Fang Fang’s Chinese New Year!

  • March 2, 2021
  • Simone McKenzie
  • · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

Every week we have a book focus where we learn new vocabulary words and discuss the meaning of each word.

Teaching vocabulary skills is important to help children express themselves clearly and meaningfully in written and spoken formats.

We were so impressed that our story matched the current celebration of Chinese New Year! We enjoyed listening to our class mates talk about how they celebrated Chinese New Year with their families.

We wrote sentences using the new vocabulary words we have learnt from the story and then created our very own ferocious dragons.

Here are some of our sentences using the vocabulary words ferocious, groan and sprinkle.

I made a ferocious face to scare my dad.
Evan

I had fairy floss and my sister groaned because she had none.
Eva

I sprinkled hundreds and thousands on a chocolate cupcake at home and it was delicious!
Archie

The lion was very ferocious. It has ferocious teeth and it has a loud roar.
Grace

The fox is very ferocious and it is white and red. It lives in the bush.
Karla

The volcano is very ferocious. There is hot, red lava in it. It is dark and steamy black.
Jessica

We followed many instructions to make our ferocious dragons…they turned out great!

Helpful Hints for Week 5

  • Look out for your child’s reading book, spelling list and sight word book. These will be sent home on Tuesday.
  • Please return the Parent Teacher Meeting Questionnaire before Thursday 4th March. We are looking forward to meeting you during this time.

Shrove Tuesday in Year One

  • February 18, 2021
  • Tanya De Gooijer
  • · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

We celebrated Shrove Tuesday in Year One.

We have learnt that Shrove Tuesday marks the day before Lent. The custom of making pancakes arose through the need to use up food items, which were forbidden during Lent.

Lent is a special time where we reflect on the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. During this time we try hard to show love and kindness to our families and friends just as Jesus did.

We had fun reading a recipe, measuring the ingredients and of course eating the delicious mini pancakes!

Year One Helpful Hints for Week 4

  • Please ensure your child is wearing the correct socks…white socks that are visible ie. no ankle socks.
  • Hair accessories are to be school colours including watches (black or navy).
  • Please book a time for your Two Way Interview…check the school website for more details.

We are looking forward to more learning next week!

Year One Helpful Hints!

  • February 11, 2021
  • Simone McKenzie
  • · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

Helpful Hints of the Week!

  • Please encourage your child to complete their morning jobs independently, for example bringing in their own note folder, water bottles and Crunch n Sip containers.
  • A keyring or name tag on your child’s school bag will help them identify their bag much easier.
  • A separate container for Crunch and Sip would be wonderful!
  • We are looking forward to seeing families making use of the drive through in the morning and afternoon.
  • If your child arrives before 8:30am without parental supervision they are to wait in the undercover area outside the Library until the morning bell goes. A teacher is on duty in this area from 8:20am.
  • Children are not permitted to run around or use equipment before school, thank you!

Thank you, thank you to all our Year One families for a seamless transition to the start of the school year. This has helped the children settle in, feel more comfortable with their routines and classroom environment. We greatly appreciate your understanding of the health guidelines this week and we look forward to welcoming you into our rooms when it is safe to do so.

Look out for our ‘helpful hints’ on the school website as they may answer some of your questions.

Here are some fun photos of our first week!

Welcome to Year One – Hints for Day One

  • January 29, 2021
  • Tanya De Gooijer
  • · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

Welcome to the first day of Year One!

We are looking forward to an exciting year together! The first day can be a little overwhelming for both children and parents – we are hoping these handy tips will alleviate some of the stress!

COVID
As WA is still in Phase 4 of the COVID pandemic, parents continue to be required to practise physical distancing (keep at least 1.5 metres or two arms lengths from each other). We have put into place a few changes for our first day to assistant with the number of parents in our classrooms. Please read the following information carefully.

We kindly ask that after you have unpacked your child’s belongings, you implement a ‘kiss and go’ approach to allow other parents into the classroom to do the same. We know day one can be a little emotional…your child is in safe hands!

Breakdown of the day:

  •  Our classroom door will open at 8:30am.
  • We will commence our day at approximately 8:45am.
  • Our day concludes at 3pm. The children will walk down to the front of the school for collection through ‘drive through’. Children can also be collected outside our classroom – please wait underneath the big tree. We are encouraging all children to begin using the ‘drive through’ system as of week 2.

Handy Tips:

  • These items are to remain in your child’s school bag: hat, library bag, spare change of underwear, lunch box and crunch and sip container. Please ensure your child’s name is printed on their hat!
  • Water bottles are to be placed on our water trolley located inside our classroom.
  • Please write your child’s name on their blue note folder. This is to be placed outside the classroom in the box labelled ‘Note Folders’.
  • Place glue sticks, crayons, scissors, coloured pencils, writing pencils and black fine liner pens in the labelled boxes. The children will share these items – no need to label everything! Both classes will have a table outside with boxes clearly labelled for each item.
  • Headphones: please ensure your child’s name is written on the actual headphones rather than the box…as the box will end up in the recycling bin 🙂
  • Place your child’s scrapbooks, writing books and black display folders in their trays. The trays are located just inside the classroom by the door. Please ensure your child’s name is printed on these – no covers are necessary.
  • If your child has a Medical Alert Plan (Asthma, anaphylaxis, Allergies etc) please ensure the front office has an updated copy of this and any necessary medication as soon as possible.

Our Parent Information Evening is being held on Tuesday 2nd February – We would love to see a representative from each family attend. It is here that you will hear some of our important messages for Year One. Our Parent Information Booklet will be available shortly on the St Emilie’s website.

Learning about seashells in Year One

  • December 10, 2020
  • Kerrie Cogger
  • · Science · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

This week our Year ones learned about the interesting creatures that live in shells in our oceans. Each student was given a shell and a magnifier to do their own observational drawing.

Here are a few photos of the students enjoying the experience.

Year One Fremantle Literature Incursion!

  • November 10, 2020
  • Simone McKenzie
  • · Year 1 · Year 1 Blue · Year 1 Gold

Thursday, 23rd May, 2019 – St Ignatius College, Primary Siġġiewi. Ms Marlene Vella Year 3 Orchids

We had an exciting visitor from the Fremantle Literature centre come to visit our school. The incursion was to nurture young people’s interest in reading and writing.

This term we have been learning about narratives, we have been listening to narratives being read and also learning the different parts of a narrative. We will be writing our very own narrative this term!

The incursion focused on the story Who’s Afraid of the Quite Nice Wolf?

We first looked at the cover of the story and then looked at each page to see what the story will be about. We discussed how the wolf looked in the story and looked at other stories that had wolf characters. We discussed the main character of the story and the setting.

The author of the story drew the wolf for the students, and they added capes and masks to create their own superhero wolves.

We had such fun!
