Persuasive writing in Year 3 Blue

  • April 1, 2022
  • Veronica Williams
  • · Year 3 Blue

In Year Three Blue, we have been diving into persuasive writing!

We have been exploring the structure of persuasive texts and the language features and devices that contribute to successful writing.

Our current persuasive topic is ‘Would you rather a dog or a cat as a pet?’ We are passionate and enthusiastic about sharing our opinions and ideas for both the dogs and cats ‘teams’ (Ayaan even made his very own cat statue decoration at home!).

We have been making cat and dog masks in class and are preparing to have a respectful debate by drafting some of our convincing arguments for each pet choice.

Some our convincing reasons include:

‘Cats don’t make a lot of mess. Dogs shed their hair and leave hair everywhere! Also, dogs might jump into water and make a mess everywhere. A cat won’t do that!’ – Zoya

‘Dogs are super fluffy. You can cuddle with them.’ – Thomas

‘Cats are not lazy…they actually play a lot! Also, they take showers on their own.’ – Veronika

‘Dogs are better because they can do tricks!’ – Sofia

‘Dogs don’t sleep all day. They are more playful than cats.’ – Aidan

We love voicing our opinions in Three Blue and we think persuasive writing is totally PAWesome!

On Wednesday, the 23rd of March, the Year Three students participated in the ‘World Maths Day Challenge’ which is run by Mathletics.

For this challenge, we participated in live Mathletics games and our total score over 20 games were submitted to the competition.

.

Year 3 students needed to complete ten games on level 1, five games on level 2 and five games on level 3.

We had a lot of fun playing live Mathletics games against our friends, school and classmates, and even other students from all around the world!

The top 10 highest scorers in Year 3 at St Emilie’s were:

1.  Matthew
2.  Fiona
3.  Noah
4.  Josh C
5.  Maya
6.  Alexander
7.  Thomas
8.  Luka U
9.  Annie
10.  Eli

Matthew achieved an oustanding score of 571 points which put him in the top 200 students in the whole of Australia – well done on this fantastic achievement Matthew!

We had a great time participating in this competition and improving our mental maths skills!

Design Technologies in Year 3!

  • February 24, 2022
  • Veronica Williams
  • · Year 3 · Year 3 Blue · Year 3 Gold

In Year Three we have been enjoying hands on learning in Design technologies!

We have explored the design process of ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, TEST, IMPROVE.

For this design process, our task was to try and make the longest paper chain possible. In teams of four or five, we thought carefully about ideas to help us make the longest paper chain possible and we then had to devise a plan about how we would achieve this.

Each team was given the same materials: two pieces of plain paper, 50cm of tape, a ruler and only 1 pair of scissors (which proved tricky with 4-5 team members)! We had to think about how to use our materials and time effectively.

Out first attempt in week 1 was a bit challenging, but it taught us a few important strategies for managing the task more effectively including:

  • working together and supporting each other
  • using small bits of tape
  • folding paper to cut multiple strips
  • cutting long, thin strips
  • making two chains at a time
  • ensuring all team members were helping

On our first attempt ever at this task, the longest paper chain was over a whopping 7m long…WOW! Well done team.

The final part of the design process is IMPROVE. So this week, we revisited our plans and used the strategies from our first attempt to try and make our paper chains even longer.

We enjoyed this hands on, challenging and fun task and we love Design Tech!

Keeping Safe – Cyber Safety

  • September 22, 2021
  • Veronica Williams
  • · Year 3 · Year 3 Blue · Year 3 Gold

As part of our Keeping Safe unit, we have been learning about cyber safety and how to stay safe online.

We know that the internet can be a helpful and useful tool and it can be lots of fun too! It is important to understand how to use the internet and online tools safely.

We engaged in many interesting discussions about online safety and learnt about the ‘Click clever, Click safe’ campaign which gives us three helpful tips for being safe online:

  1. ZIP IT – Zip it means to be careful what we say online and never give away any personal or unnecessary information.
  2. BLOCK IT – Block it means you don’t need to put up with anything that you don’t want to and you can always block or move away from your device if someone is being unkind.
  3. FLAG IT – Flag it means if you experience something unsafe, tell a trusted adult straight away.

We then created posters with helpful tips that we know and have learnt about online safety.
